Why engine oil matters
Oil lubricates the moving parts, carries heat away from places coolant cannot reach, and holds debris so the filter can catch it. Skip the interval and that same oil turns into a thicker, dirtier film that cannot do any of those jobs well.

What happens if you skip the interval
Manufacturers publish a mileage or time window for a reason. Past that window the additive package is tired. Here is what that costs later.
- Wear — pistons and bearings rely on an oil film. Once the oil breaks down, that film thins and metal contacts metal.
- Sludge — debris that should have been filtered begins to pack the oil passages, which costs power and, at the extreme, blocks flow.
- Heat — oxidized oil carries heat poorly, which stresses gaskets and can warp components.
- Fuel economy — an engine fighting thick oil works harder, so a percent or two more fuel is common along with dirtier exhaust.
What a typical shop charges
A conventional shop oil change typically costs $80–$130, depending on the vehicle, oil capacity, and oil type. That figure usually includes the shop's oil and filter.
You buy the oil and filter at retail. We handle the drain, the filter, and the disposal for a flat labor fee quoted before we start.
How often to change your oil
Change your oil every 5,000 miles, including when you use full synthetic. Atlanta heat, short trips, and stop-and-go traffic make that interval practical protection for the engine.
Follow the manual and check the dipstick between services. If the oil is dark, gritty, or low, it is due regardless of what the sticker says.
